the 'hi-fi' plant security technique ;p

The greatest annoyance from birds is their unsatisfiable taste for new seedlings. I don't mind birds 'messing' about the place but the aforesaid habit of theirs just drives me crazy. The other day I took a check on my sunflower seedlings and found that the healthiest one was wilting. It was only after a good lot of detection that I found out what had happened. The plant stalk was tied in three places to a stick and leaving the upper two supports, there was no sign of the stem beneath that. I guess the culprit couldn't pull out the entire plant and so had to be content with the little it got. The remaining stem lasted in water for two days.
After that I decided to give some sort of protection to other seedlings. Net held with sticks was no use since the wind could blow it down very easily. Metal net I couldn't get. Plain sticks stuck in the soil rotted away at the base. But then this brainwave came to me : Why Not Use A Laundry Bag? And so this is how the whole thing came about and now my little seedlings are as safe as in a bank vault. Laundry bags are easy to get(almost every household has them) , easy to store and best of all ready to use. So go ahead and try this!

teeny weeny plant(LATE)

This weeny little plant was a stray one. I found it growing with another plant that I bought from the nursery. I couldn't get myself to pull it out and do what should be done with weeds. It looked kinda cute so I just shifted it to another pot- a bigger one. It did pretty well and astounded me with the teeny-tiny things it grew underneath its leaves. Then the torrential rain episode began and by the end, this one was bald. I thought that perhaps the leaves would grow back once it recovers but sadly it didn't.. I found that out when seeing it drooping  I tried to support it and it came right out in my hand.

the 'wormy' plant- Amaranthus caudatus

Believe me this furry thing's nothing from the bio book...... it's a flower! YES!

I don't know the names of many of my plants, and would dearly love to (everyone is welcome to add a piece to my name-game). These plants that I'm focusing on are a really pretty sight in my little balcony garden. They have a spiral sort of bloom (at least I think it is the bloom) which is velvety in its feel and quite tough in its structure. I just love'em! There are three versions i have- red, yellow and pink.

SATURDAY 24th JULY EDITTING: after a little search work i've found out that this plant is called Amaranthus caudatus

the very first post

I am a fairly eccentric gardener having to make do with an L-shaped balcony of (3x8)+(3x22) sq. feet, for accommodating my green friends, since I live on the second floor and have no such wonderland as they call a 'garden'. My little balcony is my area of finding repose and relaxation. I revel in its shades of green and splashes of vibrant blooms, highlighting themselves now and then. In spite of it being a limited area it receives sufficient daylight and has a good air flow through it, which is what is more than enough to enrapture me and my plants.
My love for plants and animals goes back a long way and is growing steadier everyday. I started this blog partly because I wanted to keep a record of the doings of my plants and partly because I wanted to show them off :) Anyhow, with much pondering this post is done- the very first post!
